About Open doors
Crewkerne

Our story:

Kate and Michael set up Crewkerne Community Kitchen in July 2020 to distribute food that supermarkets couldn’t sell to people who would like to eat it – we were supported by the national FareShare charity and Bar5 Crewkerne who kindly let us use their space for free. After joining the networking group Community Action Groups Somerset we learned about ways to raise funds to set up a community centre, and so the journey began.

Volunteers with Open Doors Crewkerne

We quickly built up a group of active loyal volunteers (THANKYOU to every one of you).

In 2022 Crewkerne Town Council gave us space at the George Reynolds Centre so we have a fridge, freezer and pantry where we can store donations when necessary.  Every month we are saving more than a tonne of food and other produce from going to landfill.

In 2024 we decided to operate under the name ‘Open Doors Somerset’ which better reflected our aims and activities.

In 2025 we finally moved in to our new community hub on West St and now operate all our activities from there.

Open Doors Mission
‘Open Doors aims to create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive space in Crewkerne, to strengthen local life’.  Progress is monitored at monthly meetings and anyone is welcome to come along and get involved – email us at info@opendoorssomerset.org.uk.
